Estimated time

Learning objectives
- Plan an observation session with grade-appropriate directions and altitudes.
- Compare predicted visibility with what was actually seen.
- Reflect on sources of uncertainty (weather, light pollution, equipment).
Standards addressed
- 5-ESS1-2 (Grades 3–5)
- MS-ESS1-1 (Grades 6–8)
Materials
- A clear view of the sky (no telescope required).
- Optional: binoculars or a small telescope.
- A warm coat and a red-light flashlight for outdoor sessions.
Answer guidance
- The tool computes expected visible objects from real astronomy calculations, not a table of guesses.
- The Moon sketch has a required text description — that keeps the journal accessible.
- For Grades 9–12, encourage the student to record altitude and azimuth in degrees.

Accommodations
- Coarse geolocation is optional. An example city works for indoor sessions and rainy nights.
- The Moon sketch can be completed via the text description alone.
- Grade 3–5 direction options are cardinal only; older students can use degrees.
What is stored locally
Coordinates are rounded to two decimal places (~10 km) before storage. Precise coordinates never leave your device. Nothing is uploaded.
