Universe & Planets is an interactive astronomy education website where students, families, teachers, space enthusiasts, and curious visitors can explore planets, follow space missions, use astronomy tools, and learn about the universe through clear explanations and visual experiences.

Space can feel distant and complicated. Our goal is to bring it closer through understandable explanations, engaging visuals, astronomical data, and interactive tools that allow visitors to explore instead of simply reading.

Whether someone is studying the solar system, planning a night of skywatching, following a spacecraft, or discovering astronomy for the first time, Universe & Planets provides an enjoyable place to begin.

Our mission is to make astronomy and space science easier to explore, understand, and enjoy.

Complex topics are presented in clear language and supported by interactive maps, simulations, calculators, images, and visual explanations. The website is designed to encourage curiosity, discovery, and continued learning without requiring advanced scientific knowledge.

The Solar System

Explore Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Learn about each planet's size, temperature, atmosphere, moons, orbit, surface, and other important characteristics. Start with our overview to explore the planets of the Solar System.

Tonight's Sky

Discover planets, the Moon, stars, and other objects that may be visible from a selected location and time. Visibility depends on location, date, weather, viewing conditions, and available astronomical data. Use our sky viewer to see what is visible in tonight's sky.

Live Space Tools

Follow the International Space Station, check upcoming passes, and explore calculated spacecraft positions and journeys through the solar system. Try our live ISS Tracker and Pass Predictor, the Live Deep-Space Mission Explorer, or plan a route in the Drive the Mars Rover simulation. The rover simulation is an educational experience, not control of a real spacecraft.

Interactive Calculators

Visitors can follow spacecraft, examine planetary distances, compare worlds, plan simulated rover routes, explore mission timelines, and see how astronomical results change based on time and location.

Each tool clearly identifies whether information is:

  • Based on officially published data
  • Calculated from astronomical data
  • Estimated
  • Visually adjusted for exploration
  • Part of an educational simulation

Simulations are never presented as control of real spacecraft or as actual mission operations.

Accuracy and Transparency

Scientific accuracy and transparency are important to Universe & Planets. Information is developed using trusted sources such as NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, recognized scientific organizations, and established astronomical data services.

Space information can change as new discoveries are made and missions publish updated results. Live or location-based results may also be delayed, estimated, cached, or temporarily unavailable. Relevant tools display data timestamps, source information, limitations, and simulation labels when appropriate.

When planets, spacecraft, or distances are shown together, their sizes and spacing may be visually adjusted so visitors can see and explore them more easily. These presentations should not be understood as one common physical scale unless specifically stated.
