Exploring the Solar System
Pioneer 10 and 11 crossed the asteroid belt in the early 1970s. Voyager 1 and 2 launched in 1977; both are still transmitting from interstellar space. Cassini–Huygens spent 13 years around Saturn from 2004. The Curiosity rover has been driving on Mars since 2012, and New Horizons flew past Pluto in July 2015.
Space telescopes
Hubble deployed from STS-31 in April 1990. Its images redefined public expectations of astronomy. The James Webb Space Telescope launched on Christmas Day 2021 and released its first science images in July 2022.
